First, find out what “kit” includes
There is no universal contents list. One kit may include the case, PCB, plate, foam, daughterboard, cable, and stabilizers; another may omit the plate or stabilizers. Barebones products may include switches or keycaps, while enthusiast kits usually do not.
- Case and all external weights or badges
- Exact PCB option and daughterboard, if used
- Plate material and layout support
- Mounting hardware, gaskets, feet, and case foam
- Stabilizers, cable, carrying case, and assembly tools
- Replacement policy for a PCB that arrives faulty
Price the missing items before comparing two kits. The less expensive case can become the more expensive complete build once a plate, stabilizers, and extra shipping are added.
Choose the PCB and layout as one decision
A hot-swap PCB is convenient for a first build and future switch changes, but its sockets usually lock you to specific switch positions. A solderable PCB can support more physical layouts when the plate and firmware match, but changing the layout later requires desoldering.
- Confirm ANSI, ISO, split keys, and bottom-row support on the exact PCB revision.
- Check whether the matching plate supports the same layout combination.
- Verify MX-style, low-profile, optical, or other switch compatibility.
- For hot-swap, check 3-pin versus 5-pin switch support and socket orientation.
- Confirm wired, wireless, and battery options from the primary product documentation.
Treat plate and mounting style as construction choices
Plate material, cutouts, mounting points, and case geometry work together. Descriptions such as firm, flexible, muted, or lively are useful only as broad direction; the full assembly determines the result. Do not assume a brass plate will sound or feel the same across two unrelated keyboards.
More flex is not automatically more comfortable, and more weight is not automatically more premium. Pick a construction that suits transport, desk stability, and repair access. If you often move the board, a heavy metal case can become a daily inconvenience.
Firmware is part of the product
Check how the board is remapped, whether official firmware files are available, and whether the exact revision appears in the supported project or vendor documentation. “QMK/VIA compatible” in a reseller description is weaker evidence than a maintained source repository, a VIA definition, or instructions from the designer.
- Can you remap every key and reach the bootloader without opening the case?
- Are firmware and recovery instructions available for this revision?
- Does wireless configuration require a different tool or closed application?
- Are daughterboards, PCBs, plates, and batteries replaceable?
Separate product quality from fulfillment risk
An in-stock kit, preorder, and group buy are different purchases even when the final keyboard is identical. Check whether the item is physically in stock, the expected shipping window, cancellation terms, warranty process, and which party handles a defective PCB.
Shortlist with a comparison record
- Reject anything that misses a hard requirement from the build brief.
- Record the exact SKU, PCB, plate, layout, color, and included parts.
- Calculate the all-in build cost with shipping and missing components.
- Check the compatibility chain for switches, stabilizers, and keycaps.
- Prefer the option with clearer documentation when the products are otherwise close.
