65% keeps the arrow keys and a column of navigation keys but drops the function row, so it is the smallest layout most people can use without learning layers. A hot-swap kit lets you press switches in and pull them out without soldering, which makes it the easiest first custom build. Kits usually ship without switches and keycaps, so budget for both.

What to check before you buy

  • Check what the kit includes: case, PCB, plate and stabilizers are standard, but some kits sell the plate or stabilizers separately.
  • Match the PCB to your switches. Most hot-swap sockets take 3-pin and 5-pin MX switches; 3-pin-only sockets need the side legs clipped from 5-pin switches.
  • Look at the bottom row. Most 65% boards use a 6.25u spacebar and 1u modifiers on the right; confirm before buying an unusual keycap set.
  • Wired or wireless: tri-mode PCBs add Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz, often as a separate variant at a higher price.
