Write a one-page build brief
Before opening product tabs, write the job the keyboard must do. A useful brief fits on one screen and has hard constraints rather than adjectives.
- Required keys and physical layout
- Wired, wireless, or either
- Hot-swap or soldered
- Firmware or remapping requirements
- Maximum all-in budget and delivery deadline
- Noise constraints and shared-space rules
- Preferred case material, color, and weight—clearly marked as preferences
If size is still open, settle it with the keyboard size and layout guide before choosing a kit.
Build the parts list in dependency order

Budget for the complete bench, not the product photo
The visible kit, switches, and keycaps are only part of the landed cost. Add stabilizers if they are not included, spare switches, shipping from each seller, tax, cables, and any tools required by the assembly method. A soldered build also needs safe soldering equipment and a workspace suited to it.
- Keep a contingency line rather than spending the full ceiling on the case.
- Prefer one or two vendors when that meaningfully reduces shipping without forcing worse parts.
- Treat limited group buys as a different risk class from in-stock products.
- Do not count a future resale value as part of the budget.
Buy in an order that preserves options
- Confirm the kit is available in the exact layout and PCB option.
- Verify what the kit includes: case, PCB, plate, daughterboard, cable, foam, and hardware.
- Add compatible stabilizers before popular sizes sell out.
- Choose switches in the correct format and quantity.
- Choose keycaps only after the bottom row and spacebar are fixed.
- Add missing tools, consumables, and a safe way to store small hardware.
- Re-run the complete compatibility checklist before checkout.

Assemble through reversible checkpoints
- Inventory every part and photograph any shipping damage.
- Read the kit instructions completely before fitting hardware.
- Connect the bare PCB and test every switch position using safe tools and the maker’s procedure.
- Install and test stabilizers. The stabilizer guide covers the sequence.
- Dry-fit the plate, PCB, foam, and daughterboard cables without forcing connectors.
- Install switches while supporting hot-swap sockets from behind when accessible.
- Test the complete matrix again before closing the case.
- Fit keycaps, confirm rows and widths, then complete a final key test.
Stop when something needs force that the instructions do not mention. A bent switch pin, upside-down connector, trapped daughterboard cable, or misaligned plate is cheaper to diagnose before the next layer hides it.
